Study at Home, Practice at School
Have you heard the term "flipped classroom"? It is one of many teaching methods where the teachers give the explanation online so that the students learn at home then they can do the assignment at school. I have never experienced a flipped classroom before and I would like to experience one. I feel flipped classroom is a good idea to be done in Indonesia. It would be very effective since the student will come to the class with a brain full of the D-day's learning content. To be honest, I used to come to the classroom with a blank mind. I understand what the teacher had explained to me when I'm at home after I reread the book. What a waste of time, right? If I only need an hour to learn something, why would I waste 2 hours to learn that? I could spend my another hour to work on my assignment.
Unfortunately, it needs an advanced technology to make a flipped classroom works. As we know, only a small number of the elder people can operate gadget and the internet. Their limited ability to operate those things make them have difficulty when they run a flipped classroom. For young people, like me, who know the internet better than the elder, it easy to run a flipped classroom.
I can say flipped classroom makes the teaching activities easier for us since there are tons of application that support teachers to apply flipped classroom in their class. Let me give you one which is I find most helpful. Have you heard TED Ed? It is a website that allows you to make and do listening comprehension. As a teacher, it's crucial for us to make a problem sheet. Don't worry, TED Ed has already provided you with the problem sheet online. It called "Think." In Think page, teachers can attach the problem sheet for students to answer it later. One of the advantages is the students don't have to make a TED Ed account to do the exercise. Cool, right? Besides giving problem sheet, teachers can attach explanation about the video as well in the "Dig Deeper" column.
Aside from its advantages, which is easy to use for a beginner, TED Ed has several drawbacks as well. People can't make their own comprehension before they sign in to TED Ed account. Moreover, TED Ed requires a good internet connection since it related to load videos. If you don't have the best internet connection, it will eat your whole day up just to see a video.
I have made an example for you to try on. (Please click here)
It's about The world’s most mysterious book by Stephen Bax. I made this for high schoolers.
Please remember this thing before you try flipped classroom: make sure all of your students have access to the internet. If your students don't have the access, then there is no use running a flipped classroom.
Hi Milly!
ReplyDeleteNice post!
I'm agree with you that Indonesia should apply Flip classroom in school. It is a new way of learning and maybe it would bring another breakthrough in our education.
Btw, I like the picture.
Thank you.
Great post!
ReplyDeleteTED Ed need a good internet connection, because we need to learn based on the video and answer the "Think" part. It will be easier if Indonesia have a free internet connection hahahha
